What it felt like
Some bookshops reward a plan. Quail Ridge rewards wandering. It has been in Raleigh since 1984, it now occupies two floors in North Hills, and our reviewer’s note about it was that there is something interesting to look at around every corner, which turns out to be a literal description rather than a compliment.

Atmosphere and Design leads at 23 out of 25, the highest of any shop we have scored in that category, and the whimsy is the reason. There is a fine collection of illustrator prints in the children’s area, a staircase that our reviewer went out of her way to call cute, and a general sense that somebody has been quietly enjoying themselves with the displays for forty years.
Selection and Curation and Community Connection both come in at 21.5. The inventory is broad and deep, the special collections stand out, and the gift selection goes well past the usual bookmarks and candles. The nicest thing in the shop is not officially part of the shop at all: the owner’s husband keeps a section of books from his own library at half price, which is the sort of detail no chain could invent and no algorithm could recommend. The events calendar runs to author signings, panels and community gatherings, though for a store this rooted in Raleigh, local authors could take up a little more shelf.
Practical Considerations scores 22, and this is where Quail Ridge quietly outclasses most independent bookshops. Two floors, and a stroller and wheelchair lift beside the staircase, so the upper floor is not a members-only club for the able-bodied. Parking in North Hills is easy and the hours are generous. The gap is refreshment: no cafe and no wifi lounge, so get your coffee from one of the North Hills restaurants first and bring it with you in your head.
The children’s area deserves its own paragraph for families. It is roomy, properly stocked, and designed for children to be in rather than to be hurried through, which is rarer than it should be.
