Quail Ridge Books

Founded in 1984 and now in Raleigh’s North Hills district. Two floors, a large and well-stocked children’s area, illustrator prints, a busy calendar of author signings and panels, and a stroller and wheelchair lift beside the staircase. The owner’s husband keeps a section of half-price books from his own library.

Inside the bookshop

A fireplace nook. A pale brick chimney breast with a bright abstract painting over the mantel, two upholstered armchairs in a patchwork print drawn up to a small round table, and warm wooden shelving on both walls under section signs reading ART TECHNIQUES & CRAFTS and HOMES.

A tall wooden case under a hanging banner lettered STAFF PICKS in red. Face-out novels stand on every shelf, each with a printed card beside it headed STAFF PICK BY and a bookseller's first name, and a child's hand reaches into the frame at the left.
Staff picks
Three armchairs on a wooden floor in a window bay: two with lime-green vinyl upholstery and gold corduroy cushions, and between them a wing chair covered in a patchwork of old book covers. A Goodnight Moon cushion sits on the left-hand chair. Behind them, jigsaw puzzles and greeting cards fill the window ledges and a chevron banner hangs on the red wall.
Somewhere to sit
A staircase against a deep red wall, its treads covered by a runner of swirling multicoloured rag rug, with a curved wooden banister and slim iron balusters sweeping down to a scrolled newel post. Shelves under POETRY, HOMES and GARDENING signs stand at the foot of the stairs.
