We are the people who walk into a bookshop in a city we are visiting and emerge three hours later, blinking at the sunlight, carrying books we did not need but could not leave behind. We cross town for a beautiful library and consider a good reading room a legitimate factor in travel planning.

Why this exists

You can find a guide to almost anything worth eating, drinking or looking at. Bookshops and libraries are harder. The useful recommendation is often buried in an old blog post, a social thread or a list that tells you a place is “charming” and leaves it at that.

Hello Book Nerd is a field guide to literary travel: trustworthy, occasionally amusing field notes about bookshops, libraries and the places where reading has a life beyond the page. We visit them, spend time in them and tell you which are worth a stop, a detour or an afternoon of their own. The first entries are bookshops; libraries belong to the guide as it grows.

Pleasure, with proof nearby

Every field note answers the human question first: what kind of place is this, what does it feel like and who will love it? When a place carries a BookScore, the score shows its work.

Everyone in the visiting party scores the same twenty criteria on their own, before anybody compares answers. The public score is the plain average. Its reviewer count and range sit beside it so a confident consensus never looks the same as one person’s opinion.

Reviewers are anonymous and numbered in submission order. Reviewer 1 on one visit is not necessarily Reviewer 1 on another.

The promise

We take book places seriously. We take ourselves considerably less so.

Nobody pays to appear here or to rank higher. We buy our own books. We never clean the data: no reviewer is dropped, no outlier is discarded and no score is quietly adjusted. If someone writes “Hi” in a comment box, “Hi” is what the record says.

We do not photograph people without asking. We do not track readers: no cookies, analytics, remote fonts or third-party requests. There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.

Who it is for

First, somebody deciding where to spend an afternoon. A modest score is not a warning; it often means a place is wonderful at one thing and thin on another. The field note says which.

It is also for the people who run these places. A useful review should contain at least one sentence worth putting in the window.
