What it felt like

There is a moment about four steps inside Inked & Bound when you work out that the buzzing you can hear is a tattoo machine, and that the shelf you have stopped in front of is dark romance, all of it, and the two facts click together into a single idea. This is a fine line tattoo studio and an indie romance bookstore sharing one room on N 7th Street in Midtown Phoenix. It is not a novelty. It is a plan, and the shop commits to it completely.

Start with the shelves, because they will tell you within a minute whether this trip is for you. Selection and Curation is this shop’s lowest category at 15 out of 25, and the number is honest: you will not find general stock here, and the hunt for a rare first edition ends somewhere else. What you will find is a wall of dark romance, romantasy and contemporary romance chosen by somebody who reads what you read, with special editions and indie authors given the space that a bigger shop reserves for whatever is on the front table this month. One of our reviewers put it exactly right: limited selection, but a focused genre, and if you are into dark romance, this is your place. Come looking for a shop that has everything and you will be disappointed by one that never wanted to.

Come for the room, though, and you are in the best category in the building. Atmosphere and Design scores 20.5 out of 25, and both reviewers gave full marks to the music and to how comfortable the place feels. The lighting, the sound, the whole look of it hangs together in a way bookshops rarely manage, because half the business is an art studio and it shows. Bring a camera. Do not, however, bring a novel and an afternoon: reading nooks are thin here, and the shop is built to be moved through and looked at rather than settled into.

Community Connection lands at 18.5, and this is where our two reviewers saw different shops on the same afternoon. One found a real hub, with book clubs and author signings on the calendar and staff who clearly love the world they have built. The other saw a young business still finding its footing in the neighbourhood. Both are true, which is what a business two years into an unusual idea looks like. What neither doubted is that the people behind the counter care, and that is the part you feel first.

Practical Considerations comes in at 20 out of 25, carried by the plain virtues: parking is genuinely easy, the space is accessible, and the hours are sensible. One reviewer’s whole note on the subject was “Take Waymo!”, which is Phoenix advice you can take or leave. Two things to know before you go. There is no cafe, so this is not a shop that will keep you for three hours. And it is not really a place for children. The energy is adult, boutique and a little conspiratorial, which is a compliment if you are in the mood for it.

Go if you read romance in any of its darker or more fantastical varieties, if you follow BookTok into actual rooms, or if you have been thinking about fine line work and would enjoy browsing while you think. Go elsewhere if you want general stock, a coffee, a chair, or a shop that works for a family on a rainy afternoon.

Seventy-four is the score of a place that is very good at something narrow and knows exactly what it is doing. Phoenix has bigger bookshops. It does not have another one like this.
