What it felt like
Blackbird is small. That is the first thing you notice and the last thing that matters. Tucked into the Historic City Market on Blake Street in downtown Raleigh, it is a boutique shop that has decided curation beats volume, and then gone and proved it.
Seventy-nine point five out of a hundred. Very Good. Two reviewers, a July Friday, seventy-six and eighty-three.
Community Connection is the standout at 22 out of 25, and inside that category this shop took full marks for both cultural significance and neighbourhood integration, which no other store in our record has managed. One reviewer called it an indie bookstore at its finest and left it there. The other wrote at more length about what is on the shelves: books about bodies, queerness and diversity, a shop where all humans can find representation, and a refreshing sign that brings hope for our future. If representation in bookselling matters to you, this is the real thing rather than a table by the door in June.
Selection and Curation scores 20.5. Banned books and Pride titles are the declared specialism, but the genre range underneath is more robust than the square footage suggests, running from picture books through fiction and nonfiction. It is curated rather than comprehensive, and deliberately so.
Atmosphere and Design and Practical Considerations both land at 18.5, and they are really the same fact seen twice: this is a tight room. There are great tables for gathering and a cafe with a menu worth ordering from, so you can sit down with a latte and a new book and stay a while. There is also not a lot of space, the children’s section is limited, and both reviewers noted that a stroller or a wheelchair can get through but will be working at it. The staff, both of them said independently, are friendly and kind.
What lifts the whole visit is where it sits. Blackbird is in a walkable part of downtown surrounded by restaurants, which means the bookshop is the excuse and the afternoon is the plan. This book shop does not shy away from books with liberal topics. Found on their shelves were books about bodies, queerness, and diversity. This is a shop where all humans can find representation. A refreshing sign that brings hope for our future.

Small bookstore, but a great vibe
A boutique book shop with great tables for gathering. While the selection is quaint the genre selection was robust. From picture books to fiction and non fiction. The cafe had a great menu and I’m sure you will comfortably have a drink and read a new book with friends or family.
