**BookScore 87.4 out of 100. Outstanding.** Scored by 5 reviewers; reviewer totals ranged from 74 to 100.

## The verdict

**Go if** you want a bookstore with a point of view, if you care about who publishes and who gets shelved, or if you are visiting Houston and would like one stop that tells you something true about the city.

**Go elsewhere if** you need a cafe, a comfortable chair, and three hours.

## The visit

There is a bookstore in Houston's Third Ward that has set up shop inside the
Historic Eldorado Ballroom, and if you know anything about that building you
already understand something about Kindred Stories. This is a shop dedicated
to Black authors and Black artisans, sitting inside one of the most important
rooms in the city's cultural history, and the fit is so right that it stops
feeling like a coincidence about four steps in.

**Eighty-seven point four out of a hundred. Outstanding.** Five reviewers, a
November Tuesday, and the largest panel we have ever sent into a shop.

The first thing everyone noticed was the room. Atmosphere and Design is the
strongest category here at 22.6 out of 25, and the notes our reviewers left
read like a chorus: welcoming, pretty, beautifully decorated, super clean,
everything really well thought out. It is a shop that has been composed rather
than merely stocked, and it photographs as well as it feels. There is not a
great deal of seating, and no cafe, so this is a browse rather than an
afternoon, but the browse is a pleasure.

Selection and Curation comes in at 20.4, the lowest of the four categories and
still a strong number. The shelves lean toward the considered and the hard to
find rather than trying to carry everything, and the range across fiction,
nonfiction, children's books and work by local creators drew specific praise
for its diversity. If you want the new release that is stacked by the door of
every chain in America, you may not find it. If you want a book you had not
heard of and will not stop thinking about, you are in the right building.

Community Connection scores 22.4, and this is where the shop's mission stops
being a statement and starts being a practice: partnerships with local
organisations, a calendar of author events and readings, and a set of ties to
the Third Ward that no newcomer could manufacture. Our reviewers kept coming
back to the people. "Love the people" turned up more than once, and
"friendly staff" more than that. One simply wrote: great neighbourhood
bookstore, I highly recommend it.

Practical Considerations lands at 22.0, which is a better result than the
neighbourhood's reputation might lead you to expect. Parking and access are
easy, the hours work, and families are genuinely accommodated rather than
merely permitted. Wifi and places to sit are the thin spots.

One thing you should know about this score. Kindred Stories was the very first
place we ever scored, and our five reviewers ranged from 74 to a perfect 100,
the widest agreement gap in the whole record. We have not adjusted it. Read
that spread as five people who all liked the shop and disagreed about how
much.

**Go if** you want a bookstore with a point of view, if you care about who
publishes and who gets shelved, or if you are visiting Houston and would like
one stop that tells you something true about the city. **Go elsewhere if** you
need a cafe, a comfortable chair, and three hours.

Kindred Stories is not trying to be the biggest bookshop in Houston. It is
trying to be a specific one, in a specific building, for a specific reason,
and it succeeds at all three.
