**BookScore 89.5 out of 100. Outstanding.** Scored by 2 reviewers; reviewer totals ranged from 88 to 91.

## The verdict

**Go if** you want the full afternoon: books, coffee, a drink, kids who are happy, and a neighbourhood built to absorb the rest of the day.

**Go elsewhere if** you are after silence and a private armchair, because you will be sharing this place with a lot of contented people.

## The visit

You go in for ten minutes. You come out two hours later with a stack of books
and a coffee buzz, and the only real question is whether you are going next
door for a drink before dinner or after. Changing Hands on Camelback is the
highest scoring bookstore we have visited, and it earns that the boring way,
by being excellent at all four things we measure instead of brilliant at one.

**Eighty-nine point five out of a hundred. Outstanding.** Two reviewers, a
March Sunday, and eighty-eight and ninety-one on their scorecards: the closest
agreement in our whole record.

Community Connection tops the categories at 23 out of 25, which tells you what
kind of institution this is. One of our reviewers wrote that this bookstore
has it figured out, so many events, clearly part of the community, and that is
the shortest accurate description of the place anyone has managed. It reads
less like a shop that hosts things and more like a neighbourhood that happens
to sell books.

Selection and Curation and Practical Considerations tie at 22.5. The inventory
goes deep across genres, the staff picks are worth your attention, the
children's section is the kind that makes leaving difficult, and there is a
trade-in counter for anyone looking to cycle their shelves. On the practical
side, everything is on one level, which makes the whole shop navigable with a
stroller or a wheelchair, and the parking and hours give you no excuses.

Atmosphere and Design is the lowest of the four at 21.5, and the reason is
almost funny: there is so much stock that the aisles are narrow and there is
not much room to sit. Both reviewers loved the shelves anyway. One described
benches built into the bookcases, the other found stools scattered around and
reading nooks tucked into the shelving. It gives the place a treasure-hunt
quality. It also means you will be standing.

And then there is the cafe and the bar, which resolve most of that complaint.
Get a drink, browse at your own pace, and when you are done, Book Bar is next
door and Tesota is nearby for brunch. Our reviewer's summary was that this is
a great area for a weekend outing, and she was not talking about the bookshop
alone.

**Go if** you want the full afternoon: books, coffee, a drink, kids who are
happy, and a neighbourhood built to absorb the rest of the day. **Go elsewhere
if** you are after silence and a private armchair, because you will be sharing
this place with a lot of contented people.

Changing Hands is what a bookstore looks like when it has been part of a city
for long enough to become a piece of it.
